As the sun cast its early morning glow over Kelowna, my wife and I, fuelled by the spirit of adventure, set our sights on a whimsical weekend getaway. Our destination? The enchanting Nelson & Kootenay Lake region.
Our journey was as much about the exhilarating drive as it was about the destination. The winding roads of the Kootenays provided a breathtaking backdrop. This trip was more than just an escape; it was an ode to the sheer joy of driving, where technology met nature in perfect harmony
We embarked under the clear azure skies, taking the scenic route through the boundary country. Our path wove through the majestic Big White Road, leading us to quaint hamlets like Greenwood and Grand Forks. The journey was a kaleidoscope of nature, with the Blueberry-Paulson stretch painting the most picturesque scenery.
Our timing could not have been more perfect. We arrived just as Kootenay Lake Aviation was readying our flight. The aerial view of Kootenay Lake was a tapestry of aquatic and terrestrial grandeur, the valley sprawling like a living canvas beneath us. This bird-eye perspective was a revelation showcasing the breathtaking panorama, that one must see from above to truly appreciate.
Descending back to the embrace of earth, we retreated to our lakeside sanctuary, the Prestige Lakeside Resort. This haven isn’t just a beautiful homage to comfort and style, sitting proudly by the lake and offering stunning views, but also a nod to sustainability, offering a complimentary charger for our Tesla.
Eager to explore, we meandered through Nelson's downtown, a tapestry of heritage and vibrancy. Our culinary journey found its beginning at Pitchfork Eatery, an embodiment of the farm-to-table ethos. Here, amidst Applewood smoked olives and innovative non-alcoholic concoctions, I discovered a burger that tantalized my palate, scoring an impressive 9.0 in my burger chronicles. My wife’s choice, the AAA ribeye brochette, was a symphony of flavours, so compelling that we had to share it.
Our days were a blend of exploration and serendipitous discoveries. Mornings buzzed with the energy of Oso Negro, a quintessential coffee shop that Kelowna could certainly draw inspiration from. The ambiance is a blend of trendy and quaint, with a waterfall adding to its unique charm.
A drive to Crawford Bay on the East Shore introduced us to artisanal wonders, from bespoke jewelry to Harry Potter-inspired brooms at the one-of-a-kind North Woven Broom Co.
The journey there aboard the Kootenay Lake Ferry, the world’s longest free ferry ride was an adventure in itself.
Lunch at Red’s Bakery in Crawford Bay was an ode to simplicity, with cinnamon buns reminiscent of a warm hug and all of their treats looked delectable.
As evenings fell, we found ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Cantina del Centro, where the food danced along with our taste buds, and cinnamon churros sweetened our experience.
Our getaway was interspersed with moments of tranquillity at Cottonwood Falls Park, vibrant autumnal hues in Balfour, and the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Selkirk Mountain. Each stop was a snapshot of our journey, a testament to the Kootenays' captivating beauty.
Although we missed the call of the golf courses and the allure of the ski slopes awaiting winter’s kiss, Kaslo, and North Kootenay Lake (so much to see and do!!) we promised to return. The Kootenays, with its multifaceted beauty, has etched itself into our hearts, calling us back to relive the serenity and excitement, season after season.
Why visit the Kootenays? It's a world unto itself, with nature painting vivid backdrops, and culinary landscapes challenging the conventional, and artisanal treasures hidden in its bosom. From the serene lake to the inspiring vistas viewed from a plane, every element beckons the soul to explore further.
