Hundreds gathered at the City Park Cenotaph on Sunday morning to pay their respects to the brave men and women who fought for our nation's freedom.
The annual event hosted by Kelowna branch #26 of the Canadian Legion not only prompted attendees to give their thanks to veterans around the world, but those who still serve, and the Okanagan’s own heros.
2018 Services commemorated a significant milestone, 100 years since the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War, and despite the historic moment having been a century ago emotions in the park ran high as if it had only been yesterday.
As per tradition, the Colour Party marched into the ceremony, accompanied by the British Columbia Dragoons, Kelowna RCMP, Cadets, veterans, and other fleets of local emergency personnel.
At the stroke of 11 a.m. the “Last Post” was played by bugler, Dennis Colpitts, and the entire park blanketed in silence as attendees took a moment to honour and remember the fallen.
Wreaths were laid by local dignitaries and representatives from organizations before members of the public were invited to lay their own to commemorate their loved ones who have served.
Following “God Save the Queen,” attendees removed their poppies to lay them gently upon the wreaths, crosses and cenotaph, while silently expressing their gratitude before thanking each veteran they could while exiting the park.
