If you are anything like the staff at our office, you probably don't know the difference between the coffees that are seen on every menu board during your morning café run.

A lot of the time people are on auto-pilot when it comes to ordering coffee. They will go to the same place and order the same thing every morning to start their day.

We spent some time at Blenz Coffee learning the difference between coffee orders! We are here to educate you on what you are ordering, or what you might start ordering.

The Difference Between an espresso, macchiato, Americano, latte and cappuccino

Espresso

An espresso, or as some call it, a 'short black', is the purest way to experience coffee.

Dark, roasted coffee beans are ground up and packed into a filter.

This filter is inserted into an espresso machine and high pressure hot water shoots through the ground coffee into a small cup, and voila! Pure coffee goodness.

Macchiato

Contrary to popular belief, a macchiato is not full of chocolate and caramel - quite opposite actually!

The definition of macchiato actually means "marked" in Italian.

An espresso macchiato is simply an espresso topped with a very small layer of foamed milk, served in an equally cute, small cup.

Americano

An Americano, often confused with drip coffee, is espresso shots poured over hot water.

The benefit of ordering an Americano over a drip coffee is that it will always be made fresh to order, provide a stronger coffee taste without the bitterness and has a smoother, creamier finish.

You'll know a perfect Americano when you see it by the light colouring on top, which comes from the crema of the espresso.

Latte

The latte, which is definitely the most Instragrammed coffee in the world, is known for it's beautiful artwork and sweet flavour.

Consisting of one or two shots of espresso (based on preference) and approximately 8 ounces of steamed milk, a latte only has an inch of foam at the top.

A latte would be a great fit for someone who is new to drinking coffee as it doesn't have a bitter taste.

Cappuccino

Very similar to a latte, the cappuccino consists of only espresso and milk.

However, the milk is aerated longer to create the perfect micro foam which has a consistency close to meringue.

With the shot of espresso, steamed milk and frothy foam, this drink looks a lot like a layer cake!

Right now, all Blenz Coffee locations are providing an opportunity for you to discover what you've been missing.

Until March 8th at Blenz, all regular size Americano's are the same price as drip coffee - only $2.25! And, are calorie free!

"Once you've tried it, you'll never go back. Americanos have such a smooth flavour and are always made fresh."

Exploring and educating yourself on the difference between coffees may lead to finding your perfect morning match!
