During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us found ourselves with a little extra time on our hands. What’s sets Amaan apart is what he did with it. We sat down with him to hear his story and find out what compels him to give back to his community. Keep reading, inspiration is guaranteed!
Amaan Ali Khan, an international student in his 4th-year of physics at UBCO, found himself with some spare time on his hands after his classes moved online last year.
Compelled by his kind heart and a desire to do something outside of himself, Amaan sought out a volunteer position at The Central Okanagan Food Bank.
It was passion and work ethic that landed him the Food Bank's paid summer job after having volunteered there for only half a year.
He was over the moon to have been offered the position! Working in an environment in which the employees and volunteers are there out of the goodness of their hearts is unparalleled. Not to mention, being able to contribute to the community in a positive way while at work is so fulfilling.
"He is one of our hardest workers," says Tammie Waston, Chief Data Officer at the Food Bank. She added, " he never stops running (literally), has an amazing attitude, always positive, always smiling, always willing to help and go the extra mile, and we couldn’t be happier to have him part of the Food Bank family".
Working at the Food Bank gives him a warm feeling that keeps him coming back. Inspired by the work that they do, he is honoured to be a part of it.
Amaan’s favourite position is front and centre. He loves greeting customers as they make their way through the temporary Food Bank drive-through. His infectious energy is sure to brighten anyone’s day!
His shifts at the Food Bank consist of everything from packing and sorting donations, scrubbing bins to greeting customers at the door. He is well versed in the innermost intricacies that allow The Central Okanagan Food Bank to thrive and provide food to over 3,500 people a month.
Amaan’s positivity radiates as he runs from one end of the facility to another on a mission to get things done and boost morale. Lately, he starts his day by emptying the trash, with a smile on his face no less. No job is beneath Amaan!
Amaan's message - It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, when a part of the bigger picture, it makes a difference.
